RIP - Joe Mallon
On Friday afternoon the news filtered out around Hortland, Donadea & wider Cappagh area that a name very well associated with the club had suddenly passed away, Joe Mallon. Shock was the first reaction from the community.
Our initial thoughts are with Joe’s family; Patricia, Ethna,Anthony, Noel, Gemma, Philip, Beatrice, sons & daughters in law, his beloved grandchildren and extended family.
While most recognise the name as the main club sponsor and on the front of our jerseys in the present day, Joe has been connected with the club for longer than most remember.
Before it was a thing, Joe sponsored the club from the old garage in Naas. The name Joe Mallon Motors (Naas & Portlaoise) has been proudly on our adult jerseys since the early 90’s. This relationship has been taken over by Ethna, Anthony and Philip in recent years.
The Mallon family have been proudly associated and involved with the club over the years and right up the present day.
Joe is a Vice president of the club , as is Beatrice as well as serving as Treasurer for many years, Gemma also served as Club Secretary , Noel & Anthony played for the club for many years, Noel managed the adult footballers with Noel’s practice in Kilcock acting as club physio.
Joe’s grandson Ben currently plays for the minors and adult hurlers, son in law Donnachadh coaches our U16 hurlers and is Hurling Committee Secretary and Anthony is currently serving as LGFA senior manager.
As a mark of respect for Joe and the Mallon family, the club will suspend all club activities on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and the lotto is suspended on Tuesday night.
Our deepest condolences to Joe’s family as they get through the tough days ahead.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
