Our Joe Mallon Motors sponsored senior footballers made a winning start to the season when coming away with the two points following a battling performance away to Robertstown on a scoreline of Robertstown 1-09 Cappagh 1-10.
In an evenly contested opening period Robertstown made the better of their scoring chances as Cappagh misfired in front of goals, Robertstown built up a 0-4 to 0-0 lead including a couple of DJ Percival scores before Jack Mulligan eventually opened Cappaghs account after 15 mins with a good score off his left foot. The teams traded points over the next 10 mins with two further points from Jack keeping Cappagh in touch at 0-6 to 0-3. Just before halftime Eoin Barclay initiated a move from midfield and when the ball broke in the square Eoin was there to finish the move that he had started to the net to leave the teams all square at half time, Robertstown 0-06 Cappagh 1-03.
As Cappagh ended the 1st half with a goal, Robertstown replied at the start of the 2nd half with a goal of their own to re-establish a 3 point lead. However a 2nd yellow card issued by referee Anthony Herbert to the Roberstown wing forward saw the home side reduced to 14 early in the 2nd half and gave impetus to the Cappagh challenge. A point from play from Brian McNally and a pointed free from Thomas Jackman cancelled 2 points from Robertstown to leave the score Robertstown 1-08 Cappagh 1-05 halfway through the 2nd period. Cappagh were now doing most of the pressing with David Lovely starting to make his presence felt at midfield. A fine point from play from James Grogan, a pointed free from Thomas Jackman and a converted free from range from Dean Brennan brought Cappagh level. Cappagh hit the front for the 1st time when Cameron Dowd pointed from close range following a good team move involving the influential Patrick Jackman. Robertstown responded immediately through a free to level the game at 1-09 apiece with full time approaching. Robertstown had a chance to retake the lead, but a late free dropped short and was fielded by full back James Towell under the crossbar. Cappagh attacked up the field and substitute Cian Barclay was fouled. Dean Brennan showed his experience and kept a calm head to split the posts from 35 yards to put Cappagh ahead. From the restart the referee blew the full time whistle and Cappagh claimed a deserved one point victory.
Well done to the team and management.
