Our Joe Mallon Motors sponsored Senior Footballers got their championship campaign off to a great start with a one point win v Athgarvan in Hawkfield today.
Athgarvan played with wind advantage in the 1st half and took some good scores to move into a 7 point to 4 lead after 20 minutes, Thomas Jackman kicking two good scores from frees to keep Cappagh in touch and Dean Brennan and Brian Kelly kicking 2 nice scores from play. Cappagh levelled the game when Dean Brennan shot low to the net after good work from Brian McNally. However Athgarvan then upped their game and kicked off 6 points in a row before half time to move into a 0 13 to 1 04 lead. Cappagh emerged the 2nd half in more determined fashion with the full back line of Alan Duff, James Towell and Iarla Nolan getting to grips with their opponents and snuffing out the Athgarvan scores. At the other end of the field Dean Brennan and Jack Mulligan kicked 2 good scores before James Grogan pounced on a fumble in the Athgarvan defence to shoot soccer style to the net to leave just a point in it. Cappagh were working hard now all around the pitch to gradually get on top, and Jack Mulligan kicked the equalising score after 45 mins before Ollie Lewis put Cappagh in front for the first time from long range after 52 mins. Thomas Jackman from a free put Cappagh 2 points in front with 3 mins left on the clock. Athgarvan who had been kept scoreless to this point in the 2nd half then rallied when they saw the game slipping away and kicked 2 scores to level the game with time up on the clock. There was enough time however for Cappagh to get forward again and Dean Brennan made his way in along the endline to fist over the bar for the winning score.
